Sams backline has changed many times over the years , but it has to be said that he is quite settled with his present set up which is

a Mesa Boogie Stiletto 100w head run through

a Boogie 2x12 Recto cab

he also uses several pedals including a

Bad Horsie Wah pedal

a Carl Martin Plexitone distortion

a Digitech Bad Monkey

a Boss TU2 pedal

a Boss CE5

and a Compressor

as for guitars

my god , i think the only reason sound control employed him was because they would have gone out of business if it had'nt been for his credit cards

a Gibson Les Paul Custom - Alpine White

a 2004 custom shop build Gibson Les Paul Classic - Lightburst

a Gibson Firebird Studio - Black

a Fender USA Deluxe S1 Strat - Honey with rosewood neck

and a Korean Fender Ash Tele with Seymour Duncan alnico's

as i said sam has had many amps and geetars thru the years , so we have compiled an archive of some of the ones he can remeber

guitar wise he has owned 4 x PRS's, a CU22, a McCarty, Singlecut and a Singlecut trem, loads of Strats and Tele's including a Buddy Guy , a few more Gibsons including a couple of specials, LP Deluxe, another white Custom, and also a Studio Gem, an RD Artist, plus a 335 and a Lucille too, Ibanez whatevers, Parker Nightfly, Yamaha SG1000, 2000 and 2100 and an sg700s too, and a Mike Stern signature, 2 x Peavey Wolfgangs, Music Man Axis Sport, a Gordon Smith, a Charvel Model 4, a couple of Heritage's and countless others too. But he still insists he's not an obsessive anorak ,

ampwise he has had a Boogie MkIV, 2 x DC5's, Marshall TSL602, TSL122, 2 x JMP50 combos in the late 70's early 80's, Carlsboro, 3 Peaveys including an old Deuce, a Sessionette, a Fender Super 6 and a Deluxe 85, a Line 6 AX2, Engl Screamer and an Engl Sovereign. Also own a 1981 Cry Baby, miles and miles better than the new ones, recently refurbished, if anyone wants to put in any offers.....

daves first choice of bass is the musicman matt grey sub bass

he uses a beyerdynamic UHF wireless system which plugs into a

ampeg all-tube SVT-AV

this is an 80lb beast of an amp that in turn plugs into a SVT-610HLF

he also uses a boss bass distortion and always carries a spare amp ( a peavy 150 watt head) which has come in handy on several occasions to cover for sams and phils guitar amps and once when our monitor amp jacked in
(i would always advise two basses/amps and cabs for gigs so you have always got your back covered if owt does pack in)

Phil has tried a few over the years (not as many as Sam mind) and feels most comfortable with the Gibson Les Paul. He has two at the moment - The first is a 1993 Ebony Standard bought second hand and at a pretty damn good price because it has a headstock repair. The guy just wanted rid & Phil was glad to take it off his hands.

Prior to this Phil had two Gibson Les Paul Studios which he thought were pretty awesome. The Standard put an end to that thought & before long the two Studios were sold on ebay to fund another Standard. The second one is a wine red 2002 model and he gigs them both sometimes swapping one for the other midway through a gig.

Phil also has an Ibanez 'Performance' acoustic guitar which he uses for home recordings.

Amp.

What else could accompany two Gibson Les Paul Standards?
Phil bought Les's (of Bear Essentials fame) Marshall TSL122 combo which is a 100 Watt amp combined with 2 12" speakers. The TSL originally belonged to Sam before he sold it to Les so it certainly has been gigged and done the rounds. After a couple of good services it is in as good a condition as ever and has been pretty reliable over the years. Phil added the base cabinet specifically designed for the TSL122 which added 2 more 12" speakers and makes up an awesome 4x12 stack.

Pedals.

Phil has a few, namely a Marshall compressor, Ibanez Delay/echo/Chorus/Flanger and a Dunlop Wah Wah (The cry baby). It is only on occasion that Phil brings any of these to a gig and even if he does they are rarely used because Sam plays the major lead parts. Phil tends to feel that effects can tend to be be 'over done' and prefers the sound of raw guitar blasting through a valve amp to any pre-set/processed guitar set ups. Use effects carefully!!

Keyboards.

Phil has a Roland D50 and Yamaha DX7 from when they first came out in the 1980's. He has used them in previous bands but they are now mainly used for home recording.

Home recording.

Phil records music on his home PC through Creative Labs 'Live Drive' and QBase recording software.
He records guitar through a Line 6 Pod into the Live Drive and this is set up to simulate his stage gear. Obviously a Pod is not as cumbersome as a full stack and is also less likely to blow up your PC.
